OC Rifle Club

The Annual Prize Meeting

September 23rd, 2012

<< Long Range Shoot | Season Wind-up and AGM 2012 >>

120923_1The programme for the day was:

  1. JACKSON CHALLENGE TROPHY: 2 sighters & 10 to count at 300 & 500 yards, a.m.
  2. LOVESY CHALLENGE BOWL: 2 sighters & 10 to count at 600 yards, p.m.
  3. LONG RANGE TROPHY: 2 sighters & 10 to count at 900 yards, p.m.
  4. PRESIDENT’S PRIZE, the Championship: best aggregate score for the day.

For the best part of a week before this event the weather forecasters had been predicting that the weather on the day might be very wet and possibly very windy. Nevertheless, seven OCs arrived, as arranged, at the Surrey Rifle Association at 07.45 prepared to take what the day had to offer. As we started at 300 yards it was not actually raining but through the morning it got wetter steadily. We have some pictures: Ted & Roger at 300, Four musketeers and Ted and Roger (the two on the left, at 500.

120923_2During lunch the rain became very heavy indeed and the programme was reviewed. Normally, for the afternoon of the Prize Meeting, we have a marker for the 900 yards shoot and do our own marking at 600 yards. We thought it unlikely that the target would be visible at 900 yards anyway and determined to ask the NRA to cancel this and switch the marker to the 600 yards target. This was agreed with the NRA. One of our number decided to call it a day after lunch and we were six.

120923_3Behind the 600 yard firing point are some shelters and, perhaps due to foresight by the NRA, our target was right in front of one of these. The rain persisted for the rest of the shoot and without this refuge things would have been very unpleasant indeed.

With the change of arrangement it was decided to award the Jackson trophy for the 300 yard shoot and the pewter wine jug (the Long Range Trophy) for the 500 yard shoot. The results are, therefore, as follows:

Competition Winner Score
The Jackson R C Bourne 49.5
The Long Range (500x) R A Welford 49.4
The Lovesy R J Pile 48.4
The President’s Prize R A Welford 142.13

David King had reported that he would, for medical reasons, be unable to take part to defend his outstanding crop of titles from 2011. He did, neverthless, arrive at lunchtime to return the trophies. It is apparent that he has had a very unpleasant experience but is well on the way to full recovery. There are some photographs of President, Ted Eilley, presenting the trophies to Rick Bourne, The Jackson, Rob Welford, The Long Range (500x), Rob Pile, The Lovesy and Rob Welford The President’s Prize.
